How to Feel Amazing

I was reminded of a truth I had forgotten today: It feels good to be useful. Another way to say this might be “ It feels good to do good.”

Today, my wife sent me on an errand to buy birdseed. She got a bird feeder with a video camera for Christmas and she has now become the bird lady. Anyway, I had to get a particular birdseed that only comes from the Tractor Supply store. I don’t know if you have one of these in your town, but if you do, you should check it out. It is a store for farmers, or plant and animal enthusiasts. It is also a place where you can buy baby chickens and ducks of several different varieties.

Today, for the first time, I saw a lady buy a box of baby birds. She was in the checkout line right in front of me. She bought her birds and exited the store. I then paid for my birdseed and headed out the door. When I got outside, I saw a box of birds laying on the ground with the top open and baby birds running all over the parking lot. The lady had apparently dropped the box and the birds made a run for it. She was frantically chasing the birds everywhere. But she was also chasing all the birds at one time, so her chance of any success was not great.

Well, I’ve never chased baby ducks before, but I was presented with an opportunity. I dropped my two bags of birdseed and went after a squeeking duck. Did you know baby ducks are really fast?! These guys were scooting! I actually started making the squeeking noise the ducks were making and one of them actually turned and came towards me - I scooped him up, first time ive ever held a duck! His brother, however could tell I didn’t truly know the duck squeek language and he had not intention of being caught. He ran under a car and stayed there until I crawled under the car, then he ran across the parking lot with me chasing him and hid under a lawn mower. I finally did catch him. It was a wild seen. People were cheering in the parking lot.

I assisted the lady by returning her birds into the box and securing the lid. She was so grateful, I could tell it meant a lot to her to have her birds back.

I had no idea I was about to embark on a first-time duck wrangling adventure when I left the Tractor Supply, but admittantly, it was a fun adventure. But I also had no idea how good it would feel to help someone in need. I mean, I’ve always known it feels good to help someone, but I also forget that often, too. And that’s a real shame, because if felt so good to be helpful to this lady and rescue her ducks. And It was a good reminder that it dose feel good to feel good, but it can feel amazing to do good - to be of service to someone in need.

I’m sharing this because I think all of us want to feel good, but being useful to another person, helping someone in need, can take feeling good to a whole other level. Maybe that’s because we are made for each other and when we fulfill our purpose, to love one another, we are rewarded with an amazing feeling of joy. Don’t misunderstand me, it feels good to have someone be thankful towards something you’ve done for them, but I think this is deeper than that. I think its losing yourself in the moment and pouring yourself out for someone else that feels amazing. I think when we love, when love flows out of us, it cleanses us from the junk and debris that weighs us down. We fill like Light.

Anyway, that’s my story. I know it feels good to move well - that just makes life better. BUT, it can feel amazing to lose yourself in the service of another. All of that to say, if you want to feel amazing, hang out at Tractor Supply and wait for someone to lose their birds!
